Barcelona Spent 70 Million on Anthony Gordon Rather Than Keep Marcus Rashford, and Flick Says He Will Miss Him

Barcelona have agreed a transfer of around 70 million euros for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, having decided against making Marcus Rashford's loan permanent. Hansi Flick has said publicly that the squad will miss Rashford, which is an unusual thing for a manager to say about a decision his club has just taken.

The numbers make the choice look strange at first. Rashford returned 14 goals and 11 assists in 49 appearances across the loan, and the buy option in the original agreement was priced below what the market would now ask. On production per euro, keeping him was the obvious move.

Age and resale are the counterargument, and at Barcelona they are not minor considerations. Gordon is younger, arrives with a longer contract runway, and is an asset the club can carry on a balance sheet that has spent several years being managed around registration limits. Rashford at a discount is still a player entering the second half of a career.

Flick's comment is worth taking at face value rather than reading as dissent. A coach can prefer the player he had while accepting the reasoning that replaced him, and saying so publicly is a reasonable thing to do for someone who performed well and is now leaving.

The risk is the familiar one with a 70 million winger. Gordon has been excellent in a Newcastle side built to counter, and Barcelona ask a wide forward to do something different: hold width against a deep block, take the ball in tight areas, and score without much space. Plenty of good wingers have not made that adjustment.
