Bilbao BBK Live Turned Twenty on a Hillside, and July Now Has More Festivals Than Weekends

Bilbao BBK Live marked its twentieth edition this July on Mount Kobetamendi, the hillside above the city that has given the festival its identity since it moved there. Twenty years is a long run in a business where most festivals last five, and the site is a large part of why.

The wider July picture is more crowded than it has ever been. Mad Cool in Madrid, Resurrection Fest, FIB and Barcelona Rock Fest all sit within the same few weeks, which makes Spanish July one of the densest festival months in Europe. Density on that scale is not obviously good for any of them.

The competition is not really for audiences, who will travel, but for acts. A touring band routing a European summer plays a limited number of dates, and four Spanish festivals in overlapping weeks are bidding against each other for the same availability. That pushes fees up and pushes bills towards sameness, because everyone wants whoever is available.

Kobetamendi is the argument for having a place rather than a lineup. A festival on a hill overlooking Bilbao is somewhere people describe when they get home, and that is a durable asset in a way a headliner booking is not. Festivals that survive twenty years usually have one.

The risk for the Spanish calendar is a correction rather than a collapse. Costs are rising faster than ticket prices in most European markets, and a month this crowded is exactly the shape that thins out when a couple of the promoters have a bad summer.
