A proposed artificial intelligence campus in central Spain, budgeted at around 3 billion euros, is working its way through regional permitting. The DC Malpica project comprises two data centres of 150,000 square metres each on a campus planned for 300 megawatts. Its defining feature is not the size. It is that the energy strategy is built around generating on site rather than waiting for the grid.

That decision is a piece of information about the state of Spanish grid access. On site generation is capital intensive, operationally complicated and regulatorily awkward, and a developer only chooses it when the alternative is a connection queue long enough to make the project's timeline meaningless. Building your own power plant is what you do when the cheaper option is unavailable rather than expensive.

For the region the arithmetic is attractive in the way large industrial projects usually are. Construction employment is real, the rateable value is real, and a campus of this size anchors suppliers around it. The reservation is the same as with any single site of this weight: it concentrates a local economy on one tenant's business model.

For the national picture the project is a useful test of whether Spain's advantages survive contact with its constraints. Cheap renewable electricity and available land are exactly what an AI campus wants. If the way to access them is to build a private power system alongside, the advantage is smaller than the headline suggests.

Nothing here is built yet. Permitting is a stage, not an outcome, and projects of this scale routinely shrink between announcement and concrete. What the filing establishes is the shape of the problem developers are now solving around.
